What's that smell..?

Almost forgotten

While brainstorming ideas for Landraisers, I was planning different ways to get food which included things like farming animals and ingredients, baking, foraging, etc - but somehow fishing slipped past my net (pun definitely intended) until my good buddy Loeder (who also happens to be composing the music for the game) pointed out my foolish error. Don't ask how I missed the idea of fishing in a sea-based game until he pointed out, I'm just claiming that it would've come to me eventually...

Hookless

As I wanted fishing to be a part of the game from the get-go, I had to make it a very accessible activity. And since metallurgy was designed to come a little later on, I had to design a fishing system that required very few ingredients - including no metal

So I did that! All you need to get started is 5 flax (that blue flowery plant you may have seen in other gifs/screenshots) and a Spinning Wheel (which is made entirely out of wood). Spin your flax into string, then again spin 1 string into a net and craft the other 4 string into a rope, attach the two together and hey presto - you have your Strung Net!

Flying Fish

Much like real life, the act of fishing is very simple indeed. But unlike real life, the act of fishing doesn't take all afternoon for you to catch one small fry, when that other person opposite you on the pond is somehow reeling one in every 3 and a half minutes. Simply right click to throw your net (it will always fly the same distance, you can only affect the direction) and if the net lands in water, it will begin to sink!

It takes 120 ticks, or 2 seconds, for the net to fully sink. Each tick you have a 1/120 chance of catching something, so if you're feeling lucky you can right click again to pull the net in early, or if you wait the full 2 seconds the net will auto-retract and you will be guaranteed a roll on the drop table.

But "roll on the drop table" doesn't guarantee you an item!

As you can see, there's  a good chance you'll get absolutely nothing from your attempts, but at the same time a 40% return on food isn't bad at all! Plus you have a chance to roll onto the "junk" or "treasure" tables (and the 'junk' might even be quite useful when you're first starting out!). There are 7 items on both the junk and treasure tables, and they all have the same 1/7 drop rate, which means your chance of getting a specific item from the junk table is 1%, and your chance of a specific item from the treasure table is 0.4%. Easy!

So that should give you a little insight on to how fishing will work in Landraisers!
