Another week later, and oh boy do I have a lot to talk about this week! Thinking I might have to start doing these more than once a week for the all the content...
Let's start off with a quick look at some of the smaller changes, and then we'll move on to the meat and potatoes of this blog!
That's right, the water just got a whole lot more "watery", with a shiny new texture (compared to 'flat blue'), wavy animation, and a shore line that's a bit smoother than before!
There is also a toggle - just in case you find the new water too distracting and prefer the older, flatter looking style, you can toggle between the two to your preference! The new water has however increased the size of my gifs dramatically so they may be a bit shorter/cropped more to fit within itch's 3MB limit!
You can now farm! After crafting yourself a hoe out of some sticks and flint, you can hoe the ground, gather seeds, and replant them to get yourself some delicious wheat
No gif for this one as the process is a bit long! After growing your wheat, you can mill it into flour, combine it with some water to turn it into bread dough and finally bake the bread in a furnace to have yourself some natural, organic bread! I can do a full breakdown on farming at some point if people are interested, but it's a fairly mundane topic to make a blog on which is why it's just got a little section in here. (I say this as the man who wrote a blog post about trees last week)
What lies below? The underground is a core progression point for Landraisers - after crafting your first two tiers of Landraiser, you'll need to delve deep in order to find the next ingredients for tiers 3 and 4! First you'll need to craft yourself a Mineshaft from some logs, rope, ladders, and stone, and then you'll need some Bedrock!
Dark Green in appearance, Bedrock is only raised by Tier 2 Landraisers and is your key to the underground. Mineshafts can only be placed on Bedrock, but when you do so you'll be transported to the underground!
Don't forget your torches, because it's dark and dangerous down there!
Randomise! And in this final section, I will be going over the random generation of caves and dungeons! If you don't care for the technical aspects of cave generation, then the blog post pretty much ends here for you - but before you go, don't forget to
follow me on Twitter !
Let's start with caves, as it's what we've just discussed previously.
Not the prettiest generator in the world, but don't worry I'll treat you with the dungeon generator in a minute!
White represents solid walls, while Black is empty space. The colours are ores and gems! Please keep in mind that this image is top-down, there is no "depth" in this image.
Cave generation is very simple:
- Pick a point (A)
- Pick a second point (B), between 3 and 12 tiles away
- Connect the two with a tunnel
- Begin the process again, starting from point B!
This is repeated between 6 and 8 times for a cave, and there's 10 caves on a map! This leads to a very nice connected look for the caves, and allows for relatively easy access around the underground.
And finally, there will be a ~10 block diameter circle carved out for you when you descend underground for the first time, just in case you're unlucky enough to spawn inside a wall!
The ores and gems are then generated after the caves. There are roughly 40 veins of ore/gems underground, and their type is chosen randomly based on their rarity. And don't worry, there will be a way to regenerate the ores if you've collected them all!
The third tier of Landraiser uses exclusively items found underground, but processing will be required in order to craft it! The same goes for the fourth, but that uses a different kind of Underground...
Dungeons! Sharpen your blades and get your adventuring masks on, this will be your first tangle with proper combat in Landraisers! Dungeons are still early in planning so I don't have much to share currently, but I designed a generator for it anyway!
Dungeons are simply made up of different 15x15 rooms. All I have to do is design a room, tell the generator on which sides it connects, and then it will generate a dungeon based on this! Dungeons will be roughly 10 rooms in size, but can easily be a lot more if the generator says so!
That's all I have to share for this week, join me again next Monday for another one! Until then,
follow me on Twitter for more updates and an opportunity to give feedback!
Thanks for reading!
